Do You Have a Game Plan???

Here’s a little interesting fact about me...I have been working for myself since I was 23 years old...mostly because of what I learned from my dad.

Isabel and Dad

My father, an immigrant from Peru, came to this country with a huge dream...to have his own business selling his paintings and his art. He was 31 at the time and came to this country with very little money...actually, almost no money at all.

After working any and every job that would hire him (people don’t pay very much to a Peruvian immigrant with an art degree) he finally landed a job at a sign company. This particular company focused on creating logos for other companies, and my dad was finally able to use his art skills to assist in creating these logos. It only took a few short months for the light bulb to go off in his head: “I can have my own sign company.”

It took him quite some time before his business was able to make any money. I was a little girl at the time and watched how my dad woke up in the wee hours of the morning to work and went back to work after he put us (my sister and me) to bed.

There is so much I learned by just watching my dad that has truly molded me into the woman I am today. A lot of which has helped me to achieve my own goals in my health and weight and, yes, in my career as a nutritionist.

If I had to choose the number one thing that has helped me the most it is this...

You must PLAN. If you are failing to plan, you are planning to fail. There is SO much truth to that!

Planning

When you work for yourself and you have your own business, many times there is no one there to tell you what your tasks are for the day. You really have to plan out the month, the week, and every day in order to stay on task! I learned a lot of the organizational methods I use today the hard way. Getting to the end of the day and not having completed even one thing forced me to discipline myself to plan.

Planning is also one of the #1 things that will help you succeed on a healthy eating plan. Here are some of the things I do daily to make sure I am ready for each day and any situation. (I have been doing most of these for the past 13 years and I would say it is a huge part of the reason I’ve been able to keep my weight off for so long.)

1. The Saturday Routine

Almost every single Saturday I wake up and I ask myself the following questions...

  • What does each day look like this week?
  • What’s in the freezer?
  • What can I cook/prepare today to plan for the week?

By looking at the week ahead I can determine if there is any particular evening that I will not be home, which days are my longest work days, and what other tasks may affect my getting a healthy meal. Based on those answers I can then look at what’s in the freezer and what needs to be defrosted or purchased. I then make my list of things I am going to cook and prepare.

2. Cook in Multiples

Leftovers

I almost NEVER and I mean NEVER cook only 1 serving of something. If I am dirtying pots and pans, I am going to make it worth the effort. If I’m making dinner, I was be sure to create leftovers. I even make sure to make extra food at breakfast for any possible “just in case” grab and go snacks I may need.

For example, if you’re having 2 hard-boiled eggs with your breakfast, cook 6. If you’re making a chicken stir fry, make some extra chicken and set it aside for the next day. If you’re grilling, put some extra food on there to enjoy the next day (meat, fish or veggies).

I find this strategy to be so simple, but one many people just don’t think about. For me, if I’m going to dirty a kitchen tool (pot, pan, knife, baking sheet), I am going to maximize it.

So today’s lesson...plan, plan, plan.

I know this is not the first time you’re hearing this, but maybe this can be a loving reminder of how powerful the simple step of planning can be.
