On the Road Again

Recently I've been traveling a lot more than I would like to say. Two weeks ago I was in Florida filming the first ever Beyond Diet commercial...

Isabel filming for Beyond Diet

Then I came home for a few days and was off to NYC for one night (one very cold night!) to be part of an upcoming documentary called "Why Am I So Fat?"

Why Am I So Fat? is projected for release later this summer. Find out more at whyamisofatmovie.com.

Every opportunity that comes my way is such a blessing and a wonderful way to get the word of good health and nutrition out to the world!

But as many of my fellow BD members know, travel can be a little tough on your healthy eating plan. Besides the fact that I’m a homebody (I just love being home!), I also love to cook my own food and avoid eating out whenever possible...both are NOT something I can do while traveling.

Fortunately after years of doing this, I have the travel thing down to a science. Every once in a while I may be in a situation where I have limited choices, but I would say 9 times out of 10, there is always something healthy for me to choose from.

Here are just a few tips and tricks that I use to stay on my healthy eating plan while out navigating the world:

Athletic Greens and stevia

Packing Essentials

I pack and bring with me the things that are going to help me feel good. Here I have some chia seeds in a baggie, 2 packs of travel Athletic Greens (for 2 mornings), some protein powder (just in case I'm in a situation where I don't have healthy protein available), and digestive enzymes to take with my breakfast. I find these items are easy to pack and travel with, and I bring them with me everywhere.

Breakfast

Breakfast choices can be kind of tough. I find breakfast to be the hardest meal while traveling. Since I know how bad whole conventional eggs are for health, I have a hard time eating omelets and eggs when I'm out, since I'm pretty sure they're not organic. This is not to say that I don't, I just try and see what else I can get before I go down the egg route.

Breakfast

The first morning I ordered oatmeal and coffee. Always make sure to ask whether or not the oatmeal was made with water or milk. If it was made with water, then I get it.

Then I mixed in my protein powder. I know it looks kind of strange, but I assure you it's tasty! The only thing that would have made this even tastier would have been some fresh blueberries or strawberries, but they didn't have any. I used the stevia in my coffee with a pinch of cream and enjoyed my tasty breakfast.

Here is another picture of a breakfast I got while out in NYC. I went to one of those delis that has a breakfast buffet. Wow, oh wow...there was some AWFUL stuff in that buffet that would have sent anyone's blood sugar on a terrible rollercoaster ride all day long...French toast, pancakes, lots of breads. Here I found egg whites scrambled with veggies, and I made a mini fruit salad with blueberries, kiwi, and walnuts. Again, I don't do egg whites often, but since I knew these eggs were conventional, I figured I would stay away from the yolk. I added some fat back into the meal with the walnuts and felt pretty good after this breakfast.

Snacks and Travel Food

I am really thrilled that many airports have a lot of great healthy choices. Almost every airport I have been in lately has raw nuts and even some raw nut bars that contain only healthy ingredients. Again, be sure to look at the label and read the ingredients. Your bag of nuts should not list oils or sugar.

Raw Crunch Bar

This Raw Crunch bar is one of my favorite snack bars. I did not find it at the airport though - I got it at Whole Foods and always make sure to have one in my purse, just in case.

If my plane ride is going to be long, I also make myself a meal and pack it. I have never had a problem getting my food through security, so as long as it is not a liquid item (like yogurt will not get through), you will be fine.

Dinner on the Plane

Here is a dinner I threw together really quickly. The day I was leaving for NYC, while I was preparing my lunch, I simultaneously put food items into this plastic container for dinner (I do not love using plastic, but it's too hard to travel with glass).

It's a "mish mosh" of a bunch of leftovers that were in the fridge that I threw together for the plane ride: salad greens, roasted broccoli, half of a beef sausage (I ate the other half at lunch), and there is a small piece of a spinach frittata hiding in there that I had made for breakfast.

Lunch and dinner

I find these meals to be the easiest. Pretty much every restaurant you go to (please do not visit fast food places) will have some kind of a healthy option for you. Just use this equation when eating out:

Healthy Protein + Salad + Veggies

Dinner

I don't have anything against eating the right type of carbohydrates, but I find that most restaurants do not offer the ones you should be focusing on the most...sweet potatoes, quinoa, varieties of rice. Now that does not mean that there aren't some awesome places out there that may have them, but I usually stick to the equation above when eating out.

And that is how I navigate the big world while still eating healthy food. I find that the hardest part for most people is NOT finding the healthy food they need, but staying away from all the "not so healthy" foods that are out there. Make it your mission and your challenge to come up with healthy, delicious meals and you will see how simple travel can really be.

What are some of your favorite travel meals and snacks? Please share them with me below. I love new ideas and would love to hear how you navigate the world looking for healthy options.
