WIAW: Out for Dinner

Last night, I went out to dinner. The goal was to find a restaurant on the water, so we ended up at a place called Water’s Edge. Since one of the most common questions I see on Beyond Diet is

"What do I do when I go out to eat?"

I figured I would use my personal example from last night to show you exactly how I order when I go out to eat.

As many of you know, I live in Charleston. There are so many amazing restaurants here, and the seafood is so fresh! It’s hard to eat at most of the restaurants around here without ordering some kind of seafood. So that’s exactly what I did.

I skipped the bread basket that was immediately put on the table and ordered a glass of water.

Shrimp Cocktail

I ordered Shrimp Cocktail for my appetizer. The menu description said "boiled shrimp served chilled with Water’s Edge cocktail sauce." I skipped the cocktail sauce, but I squeezed lemon over the shrimp.

As you can see, I was almost done with my appetizer before I remembered to take a pic...Oops! Yellowfin Tuna

For my entree, I decided on the Water’s Edge Yellowfin Tuna: salt and pepper seared rare yellowfin tuna over marinated angel hair pasta served with Wakame salad. I asked that the pasta be replaced with sautéed spinach, and the restaurant had no problem making that change.  The combo was delicious! The reddish sauce is some kind of chili sauce and I did use a little of it on my fish.

Note: Since tuna is a high-mercury fish, I only have it from a trusted place about once per month.

So the next time you’re going out to dinner, remember..

  1. Ditch the bread basket. If it's too tempting, just ask the server not to bring it. My husband and I do this all the time and it's never a problem.
  2. Don’t be afraid to ask for a replacement. Restaurants are so accustomed to people making changes to their meals, it's never an issue. Don’t be afraid to swap out the pasta side dish for a delicious vegetable.
  3. Enjoy yourself. Focus on the reason why you are out...are you celebrating someone’s birthday? Is it a special night? And don’t stress about the food. Stress can cause more harm to your body than whether or not your meal is "perfect" so have a fun night!

What do you like to order when you go out to eat?
