Make This ONE Change

Just recently I decided that I wanted to teach my children to speak Spanish. Both of my parents are from South America and I am fluent in English and Spanish. I would love for my kids to also speak both languages.

So I thought...

"I’ll just speak to them in Spanish more often around the house. When I tell them something in English, I will then repeat it in Spanish."

Quickly, my thoughts then turned to "Is this enough? Should I do more?"

So I started coming up with a game plan...

I’ll buy them more Spanish books and read those to them in the evenings.

I will label items around the house in Spanish and we will review those words.

I’ll designate one day as "Spanish day" and we’ll enjoy a Spanish-themed dinner that night.

Overwhelmed Woman

The list went on and on, and as I continued coming up with my plan, instead of feeling excited about it, I felt...

OVERWHELMED

...ultimately resulting in me not wanting to do anything because the thought of doing all of the above items was exhausting just thinking about it.

Where did I go wrong?

I made the whole process way more complicated than it needed to be. If I had just stuck to the original plan of speaking more Spanish to them around the house, they would have definitely picked up many words and we could have added to the plan as the weeks went on.

This is a huge problem I see when many people first make the decision to lose weight and take care of their health.

They decide that they really must change their habits. Then, they come up with an intricate, detailed, complex plan that makes the whole process so overwhelming that they abandon the entire idea.

Even worse is when someone gets started on their plan and after a few days, decides it is just too complicated for them at this time, and, again, abandon the whole thing.

The truth is, if you start with just ONE thing at a time, you will make dramatic changes in your weight and your health very quickly.

I know there are many people out there that are "all or nothing" kind of people, but is that really working for you when it comes to your health? If you fall of the wagon a bit, do you decide that the entire day is ruined and go for the nearest donut shop?

It doesn’t have to be that way.

Make Healthy Dinner

I’ll never forget a wonderful testimonial we got from a Beyond Diet member where she shared that the only thing her family did in the beginning was switch to healthy dinners...that’s it! Nothing else, just a healthy dinner each and every night.

Eventually, after several weeks, they began packing healthy lunches, and this seemed much less overwhelming since they were already enjoying some delicious dinners that all consisted of super healthy ingredients.

Not only were they enjoying their new foods, but they were ALL seeing results in their weight loss, so they were more motivated to go on to lunch since they could already see the changes in their bodies and how they felt.

My suggestion to you today is...

If you’ve been struggling with your weight and your health for quite some time, just pick ONE THING and decide to stick with that for just 7 days (or longer). Once you have made that one change a habit, go on to another one.

You could...

  • Start planning a healthy dinner 5 nights out of the week.
  • Decrease your soda intake by half each day and replace it with water or unsweetened tea. Slowly keep lowering the soda and increasing the water and tea until you have kicked the soda habit.
  • Pack a healthy lunch and take to work or school 4 days out of the week.
  • Only pack healthy snacks and stay away from the vending machine at work.
  • Pick 3 healthy breakfast recipes you enjoy and rotate around those during the week.

Remember I said to pick ONE.

Yes, it would be wonderful if you implemented all of the strategies above, but what you want to do is create changes in your health and weight for the LONG TERM and taking it one step at a time is one of the best ways to stick to your plan.

What is the one change you will make today? Share it below, and I know it will help and motivate so many others.
