Guilt-Free Desserts

So many people think "eating healthy" means no dessert. That's just not true though! You absolutely can make a tasty dessert that's delicious and healthy at the same time. Today I want to share a few easy suggestions and ingredient substitutions that will make your dessert creations "Isabel Approved."

Swap coconut flour and almond flour for all-purpose flour.

Banana Walnut Muffins

I've successfully used coconut flour or almond flour instead of white flour or whole wheat flour in many cake, cookie, and bread recipes. Almond flour can typically be substituted 1:1 for white or whole wheat flour, but coconut flour cannot. When baking with coconut flour, I would recommend using established recipes rather than experimenting with measurements. I have found both of these flours at most supermarkets and have also ordered them online.

My sons are HUGE fans of the following recipes that are made with almond flour. I'll make one of these at the beginning of each week and serve it with breakfast or as a snack the rest of the week.

No Wheat Banana Bread

Banana Walnut Muffins

Coconut milk isn't just for smoothies.

Just because you're trying to stay away from dairy doesn't mean you have to miss out on ice cream and other "creamy" desserts. Organic coconut milk works great as a substitution for cow's milk...and many times it tastes even better!

Coconut Whipped Cream

Chunky Monkey Ice Cream

Get creative with nuts.

Nuts are an easy, filling snack all by themselves, but they can also be used to make pie crusts or blended into nut butter to be used in dessert recipes. Here are two recipes that use crushed walnuts to create a wonderful pie crust:

Strawberry Cream Pie

Walnut Crust Pumpkin Pie

Use non-dessert foods to make desserts.

Desserts don't always have to include what most people would consider "dessert ingredients" - sugar, flour, butter...you know, the usual. Here are 2 great recipes where avocadoes and black beans (yes, black beans) are used to create delicious treats:

Creamy Chocolate Pudding

The Best Chocolate Brownies

Raw honey can go a long way.

Flourless Brownies

Raw honey has so so many health benefits (not to mention it's absolutely delicious) that it is a wonderful, healthy ingredient in desserts in place of processed white sugar. Here are two recipes (one for brownies, one for cookies) that use honey as the sweetener. I also love these recipes because they're super easy to make and oh-so-yummy!

Flourless Brownies

Almond Butter Cookies

Never again will you say "I'm just dying for dessert." With all of these wonderful options, there is absolutely no need for deprivation. When your desserts are healthy, they're guilt-free!
