Tips for a Healthy Halloween

Every year at the end of October, children of all ages get dressed up and run door to door yelling "Trick or Treat!" With all the candy that's typically handed out on Halloween, is there any way to keep your kids from overdosing on sugar?

This is a question I get from Beyond Diet members every year, so this year I'm going to help you out by giving you some tricks of your own for Halloween.

First things first...

What should you hand out to trick-or-treaters?

  • Boxes of raisins
  • All-natural fruit leather
  • Natural chocolates from Trader Joe's and Whole Foods
  • Small toys (get them at the dollar store for less than the cost of a bag of candy!)

Another alternative (something I do at my house every year) is to give away small plastic baggies of loose change. The kids who come to our house love it and it doesn't cost us very much to round up all our loose change and put it into baggies. Last year we dressed up my then 1-year-old as a "money bag" and he gave away the small baggies to children when they came to do the door. Everyone loved it!

Chances are pretty good that, regardless of what you hand out, your kids are going to be given candy in their trick-or-treat bags. Let them enjoy the thrill of trick-or-treating! But as soon as they get home, sit down with them and read labels! It's never too early to educate your kids on the dangers of High Fructose Corn Syrup and Hydrogenated Oil. Show them where you see these terms on the label and put it in the throw away pile. Always offer them a health alternative and have those items ready in your home on that night.
