The ONE Technique You Need to Stay Motivated

I have often said that if I gave most people a nutrition quiz, almost everyone would get a pretty high score. There may be a few tricky items that seem healthy and really aren't, but for the most part, most people know that a baked potato is much better than French fries, a vegetable omelet is a much better choice for breakfast than a Cinnabon, and that drinking water is much better for you than a liter of soda.

Let's assume that most people (this includes you) could pick out the "good" food in most situations.

So why then do people have such a challenging time surviving the holiday season? Or going out to a restaurant during any time of the year?

I truly believe it has everything to do with the "mental game" of weight loss and health.

Now I'm not talking about hypnosis or brain washing here (although if I could do either, it would probably really help you). I'm talking about getting your thoughts and your emotions in the right place to successfully make the best choices to reach your weight loss and health goals.

Let's take a very common example that we all have experience with...

Restaurant with friendsYou arrive at your favorite restaurant and see your best friends there ready for you to sit down and enjoy great food and great conversation. You order a glass of wine (that you're going to make last as long as possible) and you all start chatting and catching up like good friends do.

The menus come and you all decide to split the steamed mussels on the appetizer menu. You also see that a small house salad comes with every dinner so you choose to get that with oil and vinegar on the side...so far so good right?

Next, you start looking through the menu, and glaring right at you are 3 words you absolutely wish you DID NOT see...Fettuccine Pasta Alfredo...aaahhh...run, run while you can.

Ok, I'm kidding of course, but what is going to stop you from ordering this dairy-filled, wheat and gluten disaster and make you choose the healthy wild salmon with a side of broccoli instead?

Is it your dear friends that will talk you out of it? Maybe, but in most situations, no.

Will it be the thought of how awful your stomach will feel after such an infusion of dairy and gluten? Maybe, but probably NOT.

Or will it be the thought of swimsuit season being just around the corner? Hmm, well in December, probably NO for most of us.

The only thing that will ensure you make the right choice for your health and weight loss goals will be a clear and vivid PICTURE of exactly what you want.

Let me explain...

Every goal I have ever set out for myself has started with one very important exercise (I share this in the first chapter of the Beyond Diet program). It's also one of the first things we ask you to write on your profile page in the Beyond Diet website. It's truly that important and is the first step toward accomplishing any goal.

What is this critical first step?

Your VISUALIZATION.Your goal described in the present tense in vivid detail.

Inside the Beyond Diet website it starts like this...

Soon, this will be my lifeSoon, this will be my life....

So, let's say it's 14 years ago and I'm determined to finally lose weight and stop the long line of Type 2 diabetes that plagued my family for generations. I would write...

Soon, this will be my life... I will wake up each day with energy and jump out of bed excited to start my day. I will choose my outfit for the day with ease because I love how everything I own looks on me. I will look in the mirror and see a woman that not only inspires people to be healthy, but loves to teach principles on how to live a great life. My family members will greatly benefit from my changes, wanting to do the same as well.

Now, let's say it was today, it looks more like this...

Soon, this will be my life... Every day I wake up feeling energized and ready to take on whatever life throws my way. I have more than enough energy to keep up with my 2 toddlers and my growing business. I rarely get sick and because of my great health, I am able to enjoy all of life's events, travel and do wonderful things with my children.

Ok, you get the point. I want you to really take some time and visualize EXACTLY what you want. Next, I want you to write it down. Do NOT miss that critical second step. Writing it down (or typing it into your Beyond Diet profile) will make it real and not just some passing thought that will be forgotten in minutes.

You may be asking yourself, "What does this have to do with my dinner out? How is this going to help me order off the next restaurant menu I come across?"

Girl with thought bubbleIn all my years as a health professional I have found that the only people who have been successful in reaching their goals and maintaining their ideal weight long term are those people who have an absolute CLEAR picture of exactly what they want for themselves and their life.

If, in the moment, the Fettuccine Pasta Alfredo jumps right off the menu and silently calls out to you, you are already thinking, "No thanks. I don't want you. I have a clear picture in my mind of where I'm going and I won't stop until I get there."

That's the way goals are achieved and that's the way winners win...by keeping the vision in their mind clear and alive and remembering it in every moment, particularly when life demands you make tough choices.

How will you say no to the pasta dish, the bread basket, or the entire table of desserts that are served? By clearly defining where you are going in this journey we call Beyond Diet. By knowing, without a shadow of a doubt, what your goal looks like and knowing that it is possible for you (and yes it is possible for you!)

So take some time today to share your visualization with the entire Beyond Diet community. Post it at the top of your profile page or share it with all of us in the SHARE section today.

There is nothing in this world that makes me happier than having someone say to me, "Isabel, my goal from last year has now become a reality. I am so happy."
