Breaking out of the weight loss prison

You may know a lot about me, but you may not know this...I am a people watcher. I observe, analyze and pay close attention to people around me no matter where I am.

Now before you think me to be a creepy weirdo, let me explain...

I have always had a deep love for helping people, especially people who are imprisoned by their weight. "Imprisoned" may seem like a harsh word to use, but I find that is the reality for so many people. I have seen people NOT do the things they love and want to do in their lives because of the extra weight on their bodies and it truly breaks my heart.

I was talking to my sister yesterday about a good friend of hers that I had the pleasure to meet just a few weeks ago...let's call her Jane. My sister said, "Isn’t Jane so great? She has really been such a huge help to me when it comes to my nutrition and my health."

Here’s a little background on Jane...

Jane

Jane used to be 50 pounds heavier than she is today. Eight years ago she decided to completely change her life by starting a healthy eating and exercise regimen. She lost all of her weight by meticulously calculating every morsel of food that went into her mouth and by journaling every minute of exercise she performed throughout the day. After she lost the weight, she continued this extremely regimented calculation and exercise schedule. When Jane deviates from her "routine" she becomes extremely irritable and some even describe her as depressed at times. Even a weight gain of a few pounds makes her extremely anxious and unable to concentrate on other areas of her life.

You and I could definitely call Jane disciplined and extremely successful in reaching her weight loss goal. Let’s not forget that a 50 pound weight loss is a HUGE accomplishment. But here is the missing link for Jane and one that I see in SO MANY people that I meet.

She still continues to be imprisoned by her weight, but now it just looks different.

Whereas before her excess weight used to stop her from enjoying her life, NOW it’s the fear of gaining the weight back that continues to take over many areas of her life.

This is not a problem just specific to Jane. I remember just a few years ago, I was still in this "fearful" place. Not only was I in the public eye promoting weight loss and health, but I was also an example to so many of my friends and family members who were looking up to me for my advice and my guidance in their own weight loss journey. The pressure was high!!!

I remember beating myself up if I even gained just a few pounds or my jeans were tight or if I missed a few workouts. I can happily say that is not where I am today. Through a long process of self-acceptance, I have found a peace and a freedom around my weight and my body that I truly want for every person I help. The ability to take great care of yourself WITHOUT the fear, WITHOUT the compulsion, and WITHOUT the self-beat up that I see so many people go through.

At this point, you may be asking yourself...

"Isabel, don’t you want us to be focused and disciplined? Don’t you want us to make our health a priority?"

Most definitely YES, but let me show you the difference between a focused and disciplined mentality versus a fearful and compulsive mentality.

You show up at your company holiday party....

Party at Isabel's

The first thing you do is scan the room for some healthy options. You find the veggie plate...JACKPOT! Good thing you ate a good healthy meal before you got here because that's about the only healthy thing around. Looks like it’s an open bar, so a nice glass of wine to nurse for the night would work (or maybe 1 cocktail). You say to yourself, "Awesome. I’ll snack on veggies if I get hungry. Chances are I won’t since I just had dinner. Let me go find my friends and maybe even hit the dance floor tonight. It’s going to be an awesome night!"

Pretty good right? Nothing to fret about. You've got some back up just in case you start to get the belly rumbles and you've got your drink and are ready to party.

How does that compare to this?

"Oh man, look at all this stuff. How am I going to stay away from it? Ugh, and all these desserts? I knew I should have just stayed home. This is so horrible. Why do I put myself in these situations? I can’t even eat while I’m here." All the while, you are tormenting yourself and people are trying to talk to you, ask you how your family is and trying to have a good time with you.

Now, some may say that this is a bit of an exaggeration, but I don’t think so. I see it all the time.

What I want for you today and in 2014 is to not just reach your weight loss and health goal, but to find the freedom to live your life without being imprisoned by your weight and your thoughts around your weight...I want you to embrace your health WITHOUT driving yourself mentally crazy with the calculations, the details and the self-sabotaging thoughts.

I want you to celebrate your successes as well as correct your mistakes, without beating yourself up anywhere in the process.

This is not an easy process, but it comes with learning that food is not the enemy. Food is designed to be our nourishment in an enjoyable way (notice the word JOY in there?)

So today, as we are all still in the midst of celebrating this wonderful holiday season, I ask you to take a minute and think about what would truly bring you freedom, peace, and joy around your weight and your health. Let me know right inside Beyond Diet or in the comments below, because that is what I am committed to help you achieve...peace and joy every day.

I want you to reach your goals AND feel a sense of freedom every day that you are on the right path. That is my gift to you.

Blessings and love to you this wonderful holiday season!
