Avocados, onions, and peppermint - what you need to know

Just recently my husband and I went to the Bahamas on vacation (this was our first official vacation since our 5 year old was born!)

Like many people on vacation, we splurged on many foods we would NOT typically eat at home…dense, cream-filled meals, breaded meats, and, you guessed it, dessert. Towards the end of the week neither one of us was feeling so great so I said to him, "We’re definitely going to increase our cleansing foods when we get home."

But what exactly does that mean?

You may have heard me talk in the past about cleansing, but you may have missed the most important part:

The absolute BEST way to cleanse your body of harmful toxins, fight illness, jump start your health and prime your body for fast fatloss is to use nutritious, whole foods that detox your organs and revitalize your system.

There are tons of whole foods you can eat to maximize weight loss and detox your body, but here are 3 of my favorites:

Avocados – These tasty fruits go well in so many dishes and recipes, and thank goodness because they are GREAT for both health and weight loss. In addition to being a good source of healthy fats, avocados stimulate glutathione which is a compound that blocks the absorption of certain bad fats and is essential for cleansing your liver. It also blocks toxicity in your blood vessels! I love adding a ¼ of an avocado to my eggs in the morning.

Onion – This simple food, used so many ways and in so many recipes, is great for cleaning your digestive system because of its anti-bacterial and immune-boosting properties. Thanks to special compounds called allocin and quercitin, onions are also a natural shield against cancer. Chop them up to throw in soups or stir-fries, or slice up red onions for a salad!

Peppermint – While most types of mint are beneficial, peppermint in particular has been scientifically proven to soothe and heal the digestive tract. It also has strong anti-microbial powers and is known to open and cleanse your respiratory system. Steep a handful of fresh leaves in 8 oz. of boiling water, then add stevia or raw honey to taste for a soothing after-dinner tea.

Other great, detoxifying foods include lemon, garlic, and peppers.

To get the full benefit of detoxifying foods, heal your digestion, and prime your body for weight loss it is best to focus on eating only cleansing foods for 7-9 days while strictly avoiding hard-on-the-belly foods like dairy, wheat and red meat. By cleansing this way, you'll detox your system without any of the unnecessary discomfort, pain and embarrassment that comes with liquid or laxative based cleanses.
