The Danger with Grains

Do you know what grains do to your health and waistline?

I know you might be thinking...

Wait a minute, Isabel! I just FINALLY converted my family to the "whole grain" bread and the "whole grain" crackers and the "whole grain" pasta for Tuesday night spaghetti... and now you're going to tell me ALL GRAINS are bad? Oh no.

Well, not exactly, but here's the deal.

Bread

The supermarket aisles and television commercials are now jam-packed with "healthier," "whole grain" options of commonly consumed foods. But don't think that these manufacturers have suddenly decided that our health is more important than their profits!

Let me explain why "whole grains" are just as toxic as anything made with regular flour.

Sugar is sugar whether it's a cube or a granule, right? A cigarette is a cigarette whether it's a Marlboro or a Virginia Slim, right? That's because...

Toxic is toxic! Big or small, whole or ground, filtered or not.

Before I lose you completely, please know that there are some delicious and healthy grains that I do approve of.

Studies show that grains like quinoa, millet, and amaranth are good for your health and a great addition to your healthy meal plan. They are technically not even grains, but seeds or "pseudo-grains," and they're packed with nutrients and vitamins. Plus, they're naturally gluten free, making them more tolerable in our digestive systems.

And sprouted whole grains are a different thing altogether... when whole grains are sprouted, a whole part of amazing enzymes and micronutrients are unlocked while the glycemic load of the grain flour is significantly reduced. In other words, if you want to buy bread at the store than choose sprouted whole grain bread.

Even rice can be enjoyed in small or moderate amounts by some people, but they key here is to listen to your body. Everybody is different, and some people suffer more from eating grains than other people, so pay attention to what your body is trying to tell you.

Do you get sick or does your weight loss slow down when you're regularly eating sprouted grains, rice, or pseudo-grains like quinoa? Then you'll probably benefit from cutting out ALL grains completely or almost completely.

In fact, MOST people will see their weight loss speed up when they cut out all grains.

Wherever you find yourself on the spectrum of grain consumption, you need to know the following.

Wheat

The main culprits are WHEAT and GLUTEN. Even if you don't find yourself in the 1% of people in this country suffering from Celiac disease, it is highly likely that you've experienced some negative health effects from wheat and gluten consumption. Gluten is not only difficult to digest, leading to uncomfortable and embarrassing side effects like gas, bloating, constipation, and diarrhea...but it has more sinister health effects, proven by modern scientific studies.

Take a look at this list of other wheat-related health issues:

  • Nutrient absorption problems with minerals like calcium, zinc, and magnesium
  • Blood sugar spikes, resulting in excess glucose stored as FAT
  • Higher LDL cholesterol levels
  • Higher risk of gall stones
  • Higher level of "stress hormones" like cortisol and adrenaline
  • Excessive blood sugar spikes, leading to metabolic syndrome
And, worse yet, the list of diseases that all of these problems can lead to:
  • Diabetes
  • Infertility
  • Depression
  • Anxiety
  • Schizophrenia
  • Obesity
  • Heart disease
  • Various cancers such as stomach, pancreatic, and bowel

Once in a while I tell you that if you'll commit to making ONE SIMPLE CHANGE, you can vastly improve your quality of life. This is one of those moments. I submit to you that just by COMPLETELY eliminating wheat from your diet, you will lose a substantial amount of weight, and feel significantly better.

And if you want to REALLY see quick results, ditch all of the grains and watch as the pounds come off faster than ever.

It's definitely possible to go grain-free and still keep your family so happy that they won't even miss Tuesday "whole grain" spaghetti night because there are TONS of easy, delicious, family-friendly recipes out there for you to choose from.

Almond Bread FFFBM

My very favorite grain-free recipes come from my friend Diane, who has done all the work already of creating grain-free versions of family favorites and testing them on her own family...so every recipe she adds to her collection is 100% family-tested.

If you're ready to go grain-free for your health AND your weight loss, then the least I can do to help is make sure it's completely easy and stress-free. I want you to be able to put fast, delicious meals on the table with no extra hassle or headache.
