How to have your turkey (and eat pie too!)

Can you believe it's almost Thanksgiving?

While I love the family focus of Thanksgiving, I know the other focus – comfort food – can cause a lot of people's good-eating intentions to go out the window.

Despite that being the norm for a lot of people, it doesn't have to be this way. Thanksgiving does not need to be the start of a month-long downward spiral that only leaves you depressed, defeated, and even more overweight come New Year's Day.

But you have to take extra steps to safe-guard the progress you've already made and your weight loss and health focus...and it's not always easy.

Even people who are very committed to their healthy eating plan can get derailed by a candy slip-up at Halloween. Then, because their plan is off track, Thanksgiving becomes the start of an eating extravaganza that extends all the way through December.

You CAN keep your body burning fat and dropping pounds – it just takes a little planning.

Here are three fast ways to ensure Thanksgiving is a fun day with family and friends, not a free-for-all food frenzy...

#1 This is NOT your last meal.

Remember that the Thanksgiving feast is just one meal in your day. Serve yourself as if it were a typical lunch or dinner, NOT the last meal you'll be having on Earth. My family eats early, so for me, it's lunch. But several hours later, when everyone else is still on the couch complaining about how awful they feel, I make myself another healthy plate of leftovers for dinner.

#2 Don’t forget the leftovers.

For me, leftovers are the best part about Thanksgiving – after my family, of course! Since you'll already be cooking, be sure to make extra for leftovers that you can use throughout the week. Leftover turkey can be used in just about anything...turkey sandwiches, turkey soup, turkey tacos, turkey omelet, or just plain turkey with a side of leftover veggies.

#3 Desserts are not off limits.

I love pecan pie as much as the next person, and I'm definitely having a piece this year, but since a family member will be bringing it, chances are it's not going to be my healthy version.

So I have two choices...make my own gluten-free version or eat the pecan pie that's offered. Both options are okay! If you don't have time to make a BD-approved dessert, enjoy a appropriate sized piece of what’s offered. The point is to plan ahead, choose what's worth the indulgence, and don't go overboard.

Thanksgiving is right around the corner and now is the time to figure out your game plan for the big feast - without overdoing it or feeling deprived - and that's exactly what these tips can help you achieve.
