Take Back December | 3 Tips for a Better You

Last month was all about fall - apple and pumpkin flavors, and the Thanksgiving feast.

This month is all about YOU!

All too often people get "lost" in the shopping, eating, and partying that comes with December's holiday parties and gift-giving.

Your packed schedule and the demands of the season can make you feel stressed which leads to overeating, overspending, and over exhausting yourself.

What is supposed to be "the most wonderful time of the year" (as the song says) quickly becomes the LEAST wonderful time of the year.

So here is what I want you to do instead...

Take back December!

What do I mean by that?

Well, the whole "take back" concept started when retailers began inching their Black Friday sales into Thanksgiving rather than waiting for Friday. The change in schedule forced employees and shoppers away from their families and the Thanksgiving holiday.

This year we saw more companies "taking back" Thanksgiving by closing for the entire day to give both employees and consumers a reason to enjoy the holiday without the allure of low prices to take them away.

Always know what's on your next plate.

So how does this apply to you "taking back" December?

I want you to concentrate on YOU this month more than the holidays, gifts, parties, food, engagements, etc. that can distract you from your goals.

"But Isabel, I have SO much to do. It’s too hard to take time for myself!"

And I totally get that...I have 2 little boys, a husband, parents, sister, business, home and a long list of to-do's every single day myself...which is why I'm sharing my 3 best tips for taking back December.

1. Always Have a Plan

Before you go to bed every night, plan out your food for the next day. This is especially important during the holidays when parties, cookies, and "treats" are abundant everywhere...specifically office kitchens and break rooms.

Use my "leftovers trick" whenever possible to get the most out of every minute in the kitchen: any time I cook anything, I prepare several servings so leftovers are already on hand.

Another trick is to always be prepared... So I always keep a few easy staple items on hand like hard boiled eggs, Greek yogurt, raw nuts, and peeled cut carrots for healthy eats on a moment’s notice.

2. Always Take Some "Me" Time

Carve out 15-30 minutes of time for yourself 2 times a week, every week (I can already hear all the moms thinking, "WHAT?"). Remember, I'm right there with you...the thought of adding even one more thing to your list can be daunting, but in this case, it can also have a domino effect of positivity.

When you make time for yourself to read a book, flip through a magazine, watch something funny on TV, or anything you like to do, you will be more mindful when taking on the other tasks on your list. Taking this dedicated time for yourself is NOT selfish. In fact, when you take care of yourself first you are more focused, impactful, and effective in other areas of your life.

3. Always Move Your Body

Find 5 minutes to exercise every single day. Studies show that 20-30 minutes of exercise is all that's needed to see significant health benefits and changes in your body. The best news is that time can be split up however needed. For example, if you get in four 5-minute workouts in one day, that is just as beneficial as getting in one 20-minute workout...great news, right?
