Shopper’s Survival Guide: 4 Smart Tips, Snacks, and Recipes

Christmas Day is right around the corner and that means...

Shopping!

Shopper's Survival Guide1If you’re hitting the malls this holiday season you need to be prepared for long days out of the house, traffic, crowds, stress, and food court temptations.

I know this has definitely happened to me...

I think I’m going out to run a couple of errands and I'll be back at the house in time for lunch, but what really ends up happening is everything takes longer than I assumed, I add a couple more tasks to my list, and I end up hungry with limited options.

Instead of falling victim to convenience foods and drive-thrus I've learned to always be prepared, and that’s exactly what I’m talking about today.

In my Shopper’s Survival Guide below you’ll find 4 of my best tips to keep you fueled with healthy foods when you’re on the go. Instead of letting your weight loss and health goals go down the drain, follow these 4 tips and trim more than just the tree :-)

#1: Eat before you go.

You wouldn’t leave for a road trip without any gas in the car, so why leave for a holiday shopping excursion without fueling up your body? Take advantage of the time and food that you do have at home and choose a high protein smoothie to fill your tank before you take off.

Here’s one of my favorites that will get you in the holiday spirit AND keep you going from store to store...

Shopper's Survival Guide2Apple Cinnamon Smoothie

Ingredients

  • 2 scoops vanilla Protein Powder
  • 1 cup almond milk
  • 1 Granny Smith apple (cored, sliced)
  • 1/2 frozen banana
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • Stevia, to taste
  • 5 ice cubes

Directions

Put all of the ingredients in a blender and blend until smooth. Enjoy!

#2. Bring your own snacks.

Being prepared means planning ahead, and that means travel-friendly snacks. Things like nuts, fruit, hard boiled eggs, chicken or turkey slices, salad, trail mix, and baked goods can all be tucked into your purse or left in the car so that you know you have options beyond the Food Court.

Shopper's Survival Guide3If you need to keep something refrigerated I highly suggest investing in a small, inexpensive cooler than can live in your car. I always have one in my car and it’s helped me countless times to make the right choice in the face of temptation.

I mentioned baked goods and it’s actually one of my favorite snacks to keep on hand...and that can be surprising to a lot of people, but there’s so much variety available in baked goods that you can always find one to suit your tastes and your goals.

I always make muffins on the weekends to ensure that I have healthy snacks throughout the week. I’ve posted one of my favorite recipes below that would be perfect for a day out shopping. Pair it with some raw nuts for protein and you’ve got a delicious, on-the-go snack that’s easy to eat and take anywhere.

Shopper's Survival Guide4Blueberry Lemon Muffins

Ingredients

  • 6 eggs
  • 1/2 cup coconut oil, melted
  • 1 tsp pure vanilla extract
  • 1/4 cup grade B maple syrup
  • Juice and zest of 1 lemon
  • 1/2 cup coconut flour
  • 1/2 tsp sea salt
  • 1/4 tsp baking soda
  • 1 cup frozen blueberries (you can also use fresh, but I used frozen)

Directions

Preheat oven to 350⁰F.

Whisk the eggs, coconut oil, vanilla extract, maple syrup, lemon juice and zest together in a large mixing bowl. Sift in the coconut flour, sea salt, and baking soda; stir until well combined.

Gently fold in the blueberries.

In a muffin tin, scoop 1/4 cup of the batter into each lined muffin cup (natural parchment muffin papers work best for lining).

Bake for 35-40 minutes.

#3. Shopping is your cardio.

Shopper's Survival Guide5If you’ve ever been shopping around the holidays then you know that finding a parking spot can be your first battle. Instead of driving in circles, take that spot that no one else wants...you know, the one waaaaay in the back. Enjoy the longer walk in and know that you’re giving your body a great gift before buying more for others.

Chances are you’ll be walking around those big malls and getting lots of miles but don’t forget to incorporate some strength training too. Cardio is great, but targeted, short-interval exercises bring out the best in your body. Try my 5 minute exercises below for a full-body workout in no time…

#4. Bring your own pick-me-up.

Shopper's Survival Guide6It’s going to be a long day, and you may need more than food fuel to keep you going. I know it’s tempting to indulge in a Starbucks jolt, but rather than buying expensive coffee that has WAY too much caffeine (look forward to an energy crash later), or satisfying your sweet tooth with one of their sugar-loaded dessert-inspired concoctions, why not get the pick-me-up you need naturally.

A high quality greens drink can give you the second wind you need without any of the caffeine, sugar, soy, or side effects that come with traditional energy drinks. Give your body what it really needs to make you feel great as you gift the day away.

I really hope that this Survival Guide helps you not just survive this holiday season, but thrive! It’s a wonderful time of year and I want you to enjoy every moment. Use these tips to make this year’s shopping trip(s) a breeze by giving your body exactly what it needs!
