Fresh Blueberries

    Blueberries are one of the most nutrient-dense and highest-antioxidant foods in the world. Native to North America, blueberries are in season from April to late September, making spring and summer the perfect time of year to incorporate this antioxidant-packed fruit into your meal plans. Take a look at just a few of the health benefits you're providing your body with when you eat blueberries:

    • Fiber - A natural source of soluble and insoluble fiber, blueberries are excellent for helping to regulate the gastrointestinal tract.
    • Vitamin C - This vitamin is crucial when it comes to repairing and maintaining bones and teeth, as well as the growth and repair of tissues in all parts of the body.
    • Vitamin K - Best known for the role it plays in blood clotting, vitamin K is also essential to building strong bones and preventing heart disease.
    • Manganese - This mineral plays an important role in the synthesis of cholesterol, carbohydrates, and proteins. It also helps with nutrient absorption and the production of digestive enzymes.
    • A wide variety of antioxidants - Blueberries are believe to contain the highest amount of antioxidants of all commonly consumed fruits and vegetables. Antioxidants protect our bodies from damage by free radicals, which contribute to aging and a number of diseases (including cancer and heart disease).
