Make the Most of Your Avocado

It's no secret that the avocado is one of my favorite foods. Why? Well, in addition to how great avocados taste, they boast the following health benefits:

  • An ample supply of vitamin B6, folate, and vitamins C & E
  • Generous servings of calcium and magnesium – for bone health – and potassium
  • Fiber and heart healthy nutrients

I also love all the ways there are to enjoy an avocado. You can spread it on sprouted whole grain toast, use it in place of mayonnaise, add it to a smoothie, or top a salad with it. And don't forget about guacamole!

So what happens if there aren't any ripe avocados at the grocery store when you go shopping? How long will you have to wait for an avocado to ripen before you can truly enjoy it?

With this trick, only 24 hours!

When you get home from the store, put your avocado in a brown paper bag with an apple or a banana. Place the bag in a dark area (your pantry, for example). Within 24 hours, you will have a ripe avocado!

Why does this happen?

Ethylene, a plant hormone that occurs naturally in apples and bananas, actually triggers the ripening process. The paper bag traps the ethylene gases in with the avocado, causing it (and the apple or banana) to ripen faster.
